ELEANOR ANNAND

ELEANOR ANNAND Biography

Having recently completed a two-year fellowship at the Penland School of Crafts northeast of Asheville, Annand has a new labor of love: the 7 Ton Letterpress Collective, a collaborative studio space in West Asheville. There, she uses a vintage 2,500-pound Vandercook Universal 3 letterpress to crank out elegant cards and invitations that feel personalized but not overly serious.

ELEANOR ANNAND Statement

A recent article in Garden and Gun magazine, Meet the South’s New Tastemakers, described Eleanor Annand as tricky to pin down. Painter? Printmaker? Illustrator? She is all of those. In regard to the variety of her work, Annand says that drawing is the foundation. “People have used mark making as a means to express visual ideas for thousands of years. Stick to sand, pen to paper we pass on our history. The uniqueness of one person’s mark to the next, the expressive qualities of a line and the development of visual history are at the root of my work. I create prints, drawings and books that tell the story of my line. Materials and craft are at the forefront of this exploration. My work employs processes such as printmaking and enameling that are both labor intensive and meditative. This labor keeps me grounded and acts as an opposing force to my more intuitive mark making.”
