TOM JASZCZAK •   SHAFER, MN

“My pots are minimal and rooted in the traditional Minnesota pottery I grew up admiring. I want my work to be pared down to the essentials, emphasizing the fundamentals of pots and be truly useful. Form and line drive my making. A successful pot has depth through process and obtains humbleness through form and thoughtfulness and playfulness in function.”  In addition to his simple forms, Jaszczak’s decoration is minimal and often placed to highlight the focal point of each pot.

Jaszczak received a BA in Visual Art and a BS in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Bemidji State University. He was an assistant to both Simon Levin and Tara Wilson, and was a summer resident and a long-term resident at the Archie Bray Foundation. From 2015-2018 Jaszczak was a resident at Penland School of Crafts with his wife, Maggie Finlayson. He has received several awards and honors including a Jerome Projects Grant, Emerging Artist Award at NCECA, Lincoln and Lil Street Fellowship through the Archie Bray Foundation. In the summer of 2014, Jaszczak was an Honored Maker at the White House Maker’s Faire. His work has been shown at museums and galleries around the nation, including the Holter Museum of Art, Greenwich House Pottery, Trax Gallery, the Pottery Show at the Old Church, the Northern Clay Center, and the Leedy Voulkos Art Center.
