LUCY V. DIERKS •   ASHEVILLE, NC

Working solely in porcelain and mixing her own glazes, Lucy Dierks makes small intimate pots demonstrating harmony of form and purpose. Animated birds perch upon the containers on the verge of song, their serenity encouraging peaceful contemplation. Dierks' ceramics reflects her fascination with creating surfaces that mimic nature, such as lichen, stones and tree bark.

In 1997, she took her first course in ceramics, rediscovering her love for Asian art and pottery. She acknowledges that Japanese ikebana containers, Oribe dishes, and the Chinese ware of the Tang and Song Dynasties have been tremendous sources of inspiration and influence.

Dierks received a BA degree from Mary Baldwin College (VA). Her work has been exhibited at the Burroughs-Chapin Museum (SC) and the Hermitage Museum (VA).

"There is something about birds that speaks to me. Their bodies intrigue me, and I find the exquisite detail of their claws and the patterning of their feathers very satisfying."
