About the Gallery —

Blue Spiral 1 presents work by exceptional Southern artists and object makers in a beautifully renovated building in the heart of downtown Asheville.  The light-filled, 15,000 square-foot gallery spans three floors connected by an open stairway.  This spacious setting allows Blue Spiral 1 to offer considerable diversity, affording accessibility to various tastes and aesthetics.

For several decades, the area surrounding Asheville, NC has increasingly become a focal point for American craft.  Blue Spiral 1 takes pride in the talent of our region, and since opening New Years Day 1991, Blue Spiral 1 has promoted craft alongside fine art, integrating paintings and other two-dimensional works with exquisite sculptural objects in glass, wood, clay, fiber, and steel.

The gallery maintains an extensive exhibition schedule, presenting over 15 shows annually — often featuring 4-5 simultaneously within various venues inside the gallery.  Thematic group exhibitions and individual artist showcases rotate on the lower two levels four times a year, while Blue Spiral 1's upper level features a wide array of works by over 75 regularly represented artists.

For 25 years, Blue Spiral 1 (preceded by New Morning Gallery) has represented the estate of Will Henry Stevens (1881-1949), an early 20th century modernist inspired by spirituality in nature.  Stevens' highly regarded oils and pastels are included in over 40 museum collections throughout the United States.

AFFIALIATE GALLERIES
John Cram has pursued his dream through the creation of four distinctive Asheville galleries.  Blue Spiral 1 presents fine art and studio craft by regional artists.  New Morning Gallery, widely regarded as one of the top craft galleries in the country, is 13,000 square feet of "Art for Living" featuring handcrafted furnishings, pottery, Judaica and much more, all by American artists.  There are also two distinct "Art to Wear" galleries featuring unique apparel, jewelry and accessories — Bellagio, in Biltmore Village, and Bellagio Everyday, in downtown.  "At Everyday, in a stunning space created by local architect Jim Samsel. you will find great design at affordable pricing... a definite visual treat." - John Cram

An extension of his love for the visual arts and cinema, Cram renovated and opened the Fine Arts Theatre in 1997.  The intimate two screen theatre features art and independent films.
