The unique birdhouses and feeders by artist Rolf Eric Holmquist are built of architectural re-
cycled materials and then painted and adorned with many objects, including curious plates, spindles
and hardware.
Fascinated by nature all his life, birdhouses are his latest artistic endeavor. “The splendor of
the Appalachian mountains reminds me of my youth in Sweden,” comments Holmquist. “While the
mountain culture is changing, many unspoiled areas remain. It is here I get my inspiration.
“In order to create my structures from authentic rural materials, I dismantled an old, dilapidat-
ed barn that was beyond restoration. I start with this weathered barn wood or old building materials
to make my birdhouses and then add paint and interesting found objects. Each is built with a specific
bird in mind and are fully functional with an easy clean out door.” |
